There’s not many things that feel better than skating down the middle of a street, then casually popping up a curb. It is one of skateboardings great joys and biggest freedoms. So, know you’ve got your basic ollie down, let’s take it to the next step and learn to ollie up a curb or onto a block.
(If you haven’t got your ollie down yet…check out my tutorial here)
My friend Terry, who taught me to surf in Australia, recently hit me up and asked for tips on how to ollie onto a block. He’s been able to skate for years but since moving to London recently, he’s too far from the surf and has decided to put the extra energy into his skating. He wanted to start ollieing onto grind blocks. This is what I told him.
01. Approach - Roll at an angle about 45 degrees to the curb with a speed you feel comfortable ollieing at.
02. Pop - Pop the ollie and look at the spot you are aiming for and throw your shoulders up onto the block.
03. Spot - Bring your legs up to clear the edge and spot your landing area.
04. Land - Extend your legs to land, looking down at your board to keep your body weight centered and stable.
05. Absorb - Absorb your landing and roll away stoked. Practice until you feel comfortable.
You might want to start by just rolling along next to the curb or block a few times and practicing your ollie to build up your confidence. It’s also a great way to check if you’re getting high enough with your pop.
Once you have the ollie up a curb from an angle confidently, try and slowly bring the angle closer to 90 degrees. You’ll soon be able to ollie up straight on!
