Skate coaching for Performance and Development - Learning to teach yourself

Coaching for performance means coaching to solve a specific problem right there and then. A very endorphin enduring type of kicking goals. The techniques and tips imparted would be very trick specific. A tiny foot adjustment here. A timing adjustment there. They would solve just the 1 problem.

Coaching for development is a more holistic approach. It revolves around asking questions and building a set of problem solving skills which will help solve this problem here, but also the next problem and so on into the future. It’s a process of personal development.

So while coaching for performance may be the quick fix we all love, unfortunately it falls into the buy cheap buy twice realm of coaching. Every time a problem arrives, you need help to solve it, and as not all problems are skate based, you might need to see a business coach, a fitness coach, a life coach and so on. Development based coaching helps teach the art of transference. A skill that will help you apply lessons from the most obscure scenario, to the most relevant issue.

‘Call them forward to learn, improve and grow, rather than just get something sorted out.’
Michael Bungay Stainer - The Coaching Habit

Developing habits which create a design thinking approach to problem solving leaves you with a transferable skill. A skill to help you improve your skateboarding, your business, and your personal life.
